Some of us started young. We may not remember the first taste of Cincinnati chili any better than we do our first steps... The taste might have come well before the first step, for those born and raised around Greater Cincinnati.
Do you remember YOUR first impression? Were you dragged to a chili parlor by a chili-vangelist? Did you grow up on it? Was the first taste different from a second or later time you tried it?
I'm one who doesn't remember. Had it all my life as far as I can recall... Price Hill Chili, Skyline, Gold Star, Dixie, Empress... My Aunt Pat worked at all the chili parlors in northern KY and the only major flavor I hadn't tried until recently is the famous Camp Washington Chili (yep, loved that one, too).
The first time I tried Cincy chili was when I moved here in 6th grade. I can definitely tell everyone that it will grow on you. It is necessary to introduce this fine substance to your tummy a couple of times before you decide whether you like it or not. It will get better every time you taste and eventually you're craving it at 8 am. The most crucial advice I can give is please no twirling of the fork....this is a chili you must eat like a piece of pie!
My family moved to Greater Cincinnati in 1978, I was in 7th grade at the time. However, I didn't get a chance to try Cincy chili until we moved to the Mt. Carmel area in 1981. We had three chili restaurants within a mile or two of each other on Old St. Rt. 74. Gold Star, Skyline, and Moonlite. I don't remember thinking much of it at the time, it was good, but it was just food. I was more interested in playing music, smoking cigarettes, and trying to figure out how to attract the opposite gender.
But when I started selling shoes in Eastgate Mall, during my senior year of high school (no Al Bundy jokes please), I found a new love for Gold Star. I must've eaten there almost every day for a year. 4 coneys, no onions, and a large Pepsi, almost every day... and sometimes twice. And just like with Pizza, there is no acceptable alternative accompanying drink than Pepsi. Huzzah!
So I guess it's not the story of when we first met, rather, it's the story of when we first fell in love...
