Midweek lunch at J.K.'s Chili

Today my beau and I met in Madeira for lunch at J.K.'s, our second visit. He works across the river in Covington so it's quite a treat when he makes his way up north for feeding time. The place was filled with a decent turnout of regulars, and the cooks talked baseball while listening to pregame discourse on 700 WLW. The Reds play Chicago at Wrigley at 8:05 tonight and we're down one in the three-game series.

I almost went for the chili cheese fries, but instead I had a four-way with onion and… Continue

The Cincy Chili Project

The Washington Post on Cincinnati Chili

Travel writer writer Ben Chapman visited Cincinnati this month to write a story about our CULTural favorite food for the Washington Post.

You know, with a ratio of about one chili parlor for every 1,000 area residents, it's safe to say that this chili really is in our DNA... Ben Chapman writes a fine tale of his cincy chili weekend, star… Continue

Eat Chili, Save Lives

Chili was very popular in Texas and in Cincinnati. It contains meat, beans, and chili sauces and powder. History says that chili joints in the early days are cheap and the quality is also poor. Despite its low-class taste in the early days, this dish fed hundreds of people during the depression years. It saved people from hunger....

Watching Bengals football and having Skyline Chili in New York City makes me happy!

I like to say that I'm an Ohio girl at heart and a city girl in my soul.

I've been up here in this crazy city they call New York for over four years now and its definitely become a part of me inside and out...but I sure do miss Cincy. My family, my friends and of course my Skyline Chili.
I used to have family and friends ship me cans of it just to give me a fix between my visits home...but then I found an awesome little place in the East Village while I was living there a couple years ago. This… Continue

Is There Cincinnati Chili In West Chester, Pa.?

It’s called compartmentalization, and even though it is an unsuitably long word, the idea seems to work pretty well.

In basic form, compartmentalization means sectioning off areas of your brain for certain functions – your artistic inclinations in one area, your rational attributes in another. In life, you could think of it as separating work from home. Extend things a little, and you get a separate compartment for how you deal with, say, people you knew when you were 10 and people you met when… Continue

I Know Cincinnati Chili, And This Ain't It

“Can't even get decent food. Right after I got here, I ordered some spaghetti with marinara sauce, and I got egg noodles and ketchup.”--Henry Hill, “Goodfellas” (1990)

Let’s review.

Hometown: Cincinnati. Chili: Skyline. Surprise: Cincinnati chili served in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Danger: Cross-pollination of foodstuffs.

I went well prepared for my date with “4-Way Cincinnati Style Chili.” I memorized the legend of the Lambrinides Family, who started their first Skyline Chili parlor… Continue
